A Soda City Market Visit

The Soda City Market takes place every Saturday from 9am - 1pm in downtown Columbia, SC.

It has been a while since I have blogged this weekly event. Here is a summer peek.
A perfect place to enjoy a treat.
There are plenty of food trucks and vendors to choose from.
The Potato Guy also make beignets! I have yet to try them.
What did I indulge in? What was aptly named a Capresa Arepa.

My guess is this is not traditional Venezuelan or Colombian food, but what a great idea! It was delicious and healthy. Eventually we will attempt to create our own arepas at home.

Sorry for the partially eaten photo. The inside was difficult to see when it was whole.
All sorts of vendors line Main Street. The state symbol is prevalent in the local crafts
The market seems to be twice as large in the summer than it was during winter.
People certainly brave the heat here.
With so much stimulation, you don't notice the soaring morning temperatures.
Of course there is your fresh produce here too. South Carolina being the number 1 peach producer in the U.S., you see lots and lots of peaches right now.
Street performers are out and about. These guys were making funky music.
Dogs are incredibly well behaved and social here.
What would a market like this be without a fun balloon artist? A lot of little girls were walking around with pretty magic balloon wands.
I hope you enjoyed our market stroll!

If you go, the market takes place rain or shine every Saturday morning throughout the year, spanning up to 6 blocks on Main Street. On street parking is free on Saturdays.

Thank you for stopping by! ~Val

  1. Last time I had an arepa was in Colombia a few years ago, and now you have got me longing for one. We do make our own empanadas, which of course are not the same at all, but that may be my South American fix for lunch today!

    3. I can't even imagine what it must feel like but I can see how such heat can make symptoms much worse.

  7. Reading about this makes me want to visit our local farmer's markets. The last one I was at was in San Luis Obispo and that one was quite a few blocks long, too. I bought some local soap and some preserves. It was a beautiful summer evening and was so nice to spend time with my husband. I miss their Thursday night events!

    1. Thank you Jan. Temperatures are averaging 90F each day (32C). It is usually very humid so it can feel 5 - 8 degrees warmer that that. I love it though. The heat instantly relaxes me when I step outside!

  11. This looks like a great place to hang out - it reminds me of last year when my sister and I took a road trip and stopped in Eugene, Oregon - a university town and they had the MOST awesome street market and a lot of the vendors were displaying their pottery - there are so many pottery crafters in Eugene. I loved the whole vibe of it and of course, as I do everywhere I visit, I wanted to move their pronto!! But I'm still here ...in my little mountain house. loved all the photos. what fun you have - getting out so much.

    1. University towns always seem to have so much to offer. The university students here are definitely in walking distance to this weekly market. During the school season we did see a lot more young adults walking around. These markets are so fun! I fantasize about living in a busy downtown or city but in reality would not like the noise!

  13. Lovely market stroll, Val. I enjoy visits to street markets, much better than being stuffed in a shopping mall. And I always feel like I'm doing great supporting small businesses. Thank you for sharing, your pics capture the mood so well.

    1. One of the things that is stressed here is that items must be locally made or locally grown. Then we know we are supporting local small businesses.

  20. Oh this market looks so fun, reminds me of when I lived in Seattle. We have markets like this too in NY but they are always soooo crowded. Do they have fried oreos? I always look for the fried oreos lol.

    1. Surprisingly there are no fried Oreos (or Twinkies for that matter)! We have only seen pizza here one time which which I found funny as a transplant from the north. Regardless there is a great diversity of tasty food choices.

  23. Those peaches look amazing. This kind of markets are so lovely, aren't they? I like those wooden bowls a lot, it's just the thing I would love to buy, but never do as I don't have a lot of space in my kitchen.

  25. I would love to go Val! Looks amazing! So many vendors! I love peaches! LOL! When I was in Sedona, it was 104. It was hot, but it was a dry heat and I could handle it. Not now in Canada, so much humidity! I feel like a wet rat! LOL! Do you have humidity where you live? Big Hugs!

    1. Hi Stacy, It is very humid here. So if it is 95, with the humidity, there can be a feel like temperature of 104! Dry heat is much easier to tolerate. Although I have acclimated well to this weather. To me, it is way better than the cold. :) Hugs!
