Strolling the City Streets

When walking any city street, I find it a must to look up!
It is where the good stuff is.
Most of these on are Main Street in Columbia, SC.
It has old and new looks.
There is nothing super old here though because the much of the city was devastated in the Civil War.
I tend to like the older, fancy over the top buildings.
There is also art deco fun.
Regardless of style, it is certainly a treat to see them all.
The Mast General Store is a must to check out. They have a little bit of everything here!
I will leave you with the Never Bust chain below by artist Blue Sky which attaches 2 buildings.

The story goes that the sneaky artist installed this piece in 2000 during the middle of the night without approval from the city. Luckily the city embraced it!
I hope you enjoyed this city stroll as much as I have!

Thank you for stopping by! ~Val

  2. OH YES....Looking up is a must esp when in a downtown area. Nashville TN has some really cool buildings that I love to look up at. Pretty cool to take the base to top shots with your camera and fit in the sky view along with it. I esp. love the older buildings and I love that Nashville has remodeled and reused so many of them. Not the biggest fans of the glass ones cause to me they just don't speak to you as well as the curves, and the images of the older ones. Thank you for making the jump over to my blog, and leaving such a nice comment. I will honor my promise I made and care for my moms furbabes, just glad that I stopped her a couple years ago by stating NO MORE! Come again to the blog anytime..

  5. Looking up when strolling a city is usually a must for me as well. Besides admiring the architecture of some particular place (be it traditional or modern, or a mix of the two), I also like to see what people do with their windows, what kind of plants and flowers they keep on their windows and so on. I love looking at building and houses, it's something I never tire of. Even in our own town we can always find new things to see if we keep our eyes open.

There are some lovely buildings there, I especially like the one in art deco style. The giant chain is fabulous! This postmodern installment is really eye-catching and interesting. Kudos to artist for making it and to the city for accepting it (even if it was put on without a licence). Sometimes rules should be broken. Thank you for sharing these shots. I don't know much about South Caroline or about this city. I'm guessing that Columbia was named after Columbus? It looks like a lovely city.
