Beaufort South Carolina

Beaufort is a gorgeous town near the coast of South Carolina.
Henry C Chambers Waterfront Park is a perfect place to unwind.
Gaze out at the Beaufort River.
We enjoyed morning coffee and bagels with barely anyone around.
I played drums in the evening (now I kind of want bongos).
Just peaceful.
The streets of this second oldest town in South Carolina (chartered in 1711) are a joy to stroll.
We were here on a hot day so when we needed a cool down, we popped into a bar.
This cozy little place was Hemingways where we enjoyed talking with locals.
The old arsenal built between 1795 - 1799 is now the visitors center.
It is also a museum full of history since the arsenal was in use during the Revolutionary War and the Civil War.
Besides bars, there are plenty of eateries, shops and art galleries to enjoy.
We were enthralled by the art at Ly Bensons Gallery.
The stone carvings in particular.
And the color!

This informative Reverend told us history of Harriet Tubman. She was so much more than the mastermind behind the Underground Railroad!

This stunning sculpture next to me is a model of the Harriet Tubman Monument by Ed Dwight. Funds are being raised to build a large replica at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Beaufort. To learn more, please visit www.harriettubmanmonument.com

We wandered over the the church to see the future site as well as the bust of Robert Smalls. Smalls was another inspirational figure having been born into slavery in Beaufort and later went on to be a Civil War hero and Congressman.
We adored the Beaufort Inn.
The inn has a number of out buildings spanning an entire block. We opted to stay in an adorable cottage.
This town oozes charm. We loved it so much that we plan on visiting once a year.

My next post will be The Point, which is a gorgeous section of antebellum homes, Spanish moss, and picture perfect yards.

Thank you for stopping by! ~Val
