The Churchyard of Trinity Cathedral

Trinity Cathedral is adjacent to the state house in Columbia, SC.
Incorporated in 1813 there is much history in its churchyard.
Here rests notables of the city.
Many buried in the 1800s.
As creepy as it is, I have always enjoyed old, ornate cemeteries.
Particularly the fancy headstones.
I personally do not want to end up in the ground, but if I did I would want a beautiful spot with an elegant headstone.
The church is stunning too.
This annex building is equally gorgeous.
If you go, the cathedral is located at 110 Sumter Street.

I hope you enjoyed this stroll.

Thank you for stopping by! ~Val

  1. I have to say that I don't find cemeteries creepy at all, and I spend time in them. Old cemeteries are usually well treed, they are quiet, and wildlife is attracted to them. As a birder cemeteries are choice locations. I used to live closer to a cemetery north of Toronto which was a premier spot to find Long-eared Owls in the winter. The headstones and monuments are of less interest to me than others I am sure, but they must be a rich source of information for anthropologists and historians.

    1. This cemetery provides a map and short bio of the notables, perfect for the historian. If you are ever in the Cambridge, Massachusetts area I would strongly recommend visiting Mount Auburn Cemetery. It is absolutely stunning with its variety of trees and designed to attract wildlife. A great stop for the birder, particularly in April and May.

  4. I love cemeteries and I like spending time in them. There can be so much history and often they are so peaceful and some so very old. In fact, Rick and I are going to try to do that this next weekend (find family) when we go to Ohio. Like you, I don't want to end up in the ground but the spots themselves are lovely. This one looks beautiful as does the church. Did you go inside? A future post, perhaps?

  11. You've share gorgeous pictures. I like looking around churchyards as well. Being raised in a country where the headstones are impressive and huge, now I'm more attracted to the less conspicuous, smaller headstones.
